2 Days to Go!


Well, 2 days to go until we all fly out direct from Heathrow to Cape Town, Africa.  All our jabs are up to date, and we have our 'fitness to travel' certificates signed off by the Doctors.  We each have our PPE equipment purchased so steel toed boots fitted and builder's trousers tailored (or not).  We are busy collecting stationery goods and children's toys and clothes to take as extra luggage for the charity to distribute across the townships around Cape Town, and having a last minute push on our Just Giving sites to raise extra cash that goes direct to those in need.  It's all exciting preparation.  I must remember to collect my Rand (currency) though.

 Most Deputy Principals will be choosing which posh shoes - not me, which steel toe boots?!

On Site - Sosebenza Primary School

Sorry there are no photos, but the Internet connection has not been strong enough to load them for the last couple of days.  On to the news... Day 3 in Africa but first full day on site.  All up by 6, and out by 7am and ready for work for 8am.  What a full on day!  By 7.30am 100s of school children were walking to school in their uniforms.  The first school site we stopped at, we were greeted by many children waving, and singing and dancing with their parents.  They were so enthusiastically welcoming to the Mellon Educate Charity workers, so grateful for the transformations that would be happening in their school and community again. We had another great morning of tourist bits carried on from yesterday, which included, the trip to see the penguins at Table Mountain National Park and a funicular ride to the top of Cape Point, which is pretty much the southern most tip of South Africa - stunning scenery. An African Penguin - one of the few sites where this endangered bird can be observed at Nancy (a training brickie) and me at Cape Point - thigh burn even on the descent down it was so steep Add caption The somewhat blurred picture is a wild baboon believe it or not.  There were about three of them.  It really is a baboon! Today, Sunday, we were supposed to go up Table Mountain, but it had its table cloth on it today (in other words, a layer of cloud so you can go up there but you wouldn't see anything).  Change of plans, but there is so much to see we were spoilt for choice.  Instead we ventured to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which were superb - like no other gard...

What an amazing last few days.  Here we are in the hotel and just checked out.  I cannot believe it has come to an end.  I am definitely wanting to come back, and I can see why there are over 50 people who have come over 10 years, and some since the Building Blitzes started some 16 years ago. I've not been able to come on the blog because wifi is definitely an issue at times.  I will post loads of pictures and explain all about the incredible experiences we have been having these past few days, when I get back to the UK on Monday morning, bright and early at some 4.45am.  Straight into work, so let's hope sleep finds me on the plane.  A life changing experience for us all though, and I want to thank you for sharing in it with me here, and for donating as a number of you have.  All your funds will go directly to the charity and to the people most in need here in Cape Town.  Come back on in a day or two and follow the build and the celebrations w...
